Marayke Jonkers

Tuesday – Keynote session

Paralympic multi-medal-winning swimmer (3 medals at 3 Games), Dolphin P192 Marayke Jonkers PLY shares the secrets of her Peak Performance Mindset to help your swimmers achieve their own Gold Medal Life.
A veteran of 3 Paralympic Games – Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 – over an international career spanning 2 decades, Marayke is a former world record holder and has broken over 70 Australian Open records in breaststroke, individual medley and butterfly.
She’s made Australian sporting history becoming the first female Paratriathlete to compete at a world championships (Budapest).
Marayke’s sporting journey began slightly differently to most elite athletes, as she first learned to swim after becoming paraplegic in a car accident when she was 8 months old.
Realising the challenges faced by athletes with a disability in sport, she founded Sporting Dreams which empowers young athletes with disabilities to become involved in sport.
Marayke has earned two degrees at the University of the Sunshine Coast, in social science and communications, and achieved a Dean’s Commendation for Academic Excellence. Since graduating, the university has recognised her contribution to the community and achievements by awarding her the inaugural Outstanding Alumni and an Honorary Senior Fellowship.
During her illustrious career, she has received a string of additional awards, with highlights for Marayke being a Sydney 2000 Olympic torch bearer, flag bearer for the World Championships, the Sunshine Coast Sporting Hall of Fame and being chosen as an international women’s leader of the future.
Other awards include:
• 2018 Queens Baton Bearer Gold Coast Commonwealth Games
• 2010 Sporting Wheelie of the Year (QLD highest award for athletes with a disability)
• 2008 & 2004 Sunshine Coast Sport Star of the month
• 2008 and 2004 Outstanding Paralympian Award Sunshine Coast Sports star awards
• 2005 Queensland Young Achiever of the Year Award – winner of the overall award & sport section
• 2004 & 2001 Young Australian of the Year Awards finalist
• 1998, 2004, 2006 Young Queenslander of the Year Awards finalist
• 2002 & 2016 Senior Sport Star of the Year Sunshine Coast
• 2000 Australian Sports Medal
Marayke is a media personality who has featured in The Courier-Mail, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Insight on SBS and Totally Wild, and has reported on the Paraylmpics as a journalist.
She loves a challenge and has tried skydiving, sit-skiing, snorkelling, kayaking, camel riding, has travelled through Europe. These days Marayke can be found handcycling along the Maroochy River with her rescue Chihuahua Pepe.
Using sport as a metaphor for life, to mentor athletes and motivate corporate audiences, Marayke has created a Peak Performance mindset formula called a Gold Medal Life, not a Gold Medal Moment.
