Vern Gambetta

Mentor Coach, Founding Father of Functional Sports Training, Founder of GAIN Network

Vern Gambetta has spent decades shaping performance across every tier of competitive swimming, and his fingerprints are on many of the most accomplished programs in the United States.

At the collegiate level, Vern has worked with the University of Michigan women’s program, Kenyon College — widely regarded as the greatest Division III swimming program of all time — and the University of Tennessee under head coach Matt Kredich. He now resides in the Bay Area, where he consults with the University of California, Berkeley, one of the premier collegiate and professional training hubs in the world.

On the club side, Vern’s work dates back to the early 2000s and runs through a roster of programs that consistently produce Olympians. He worked with Carmel Swim Club, and has consulted with Dynamo Swim Club, the Mason Manta Rays, and the Sandpipers of Nevada — each a proven pipeline to international competition. He also served as the long-time performance coach for the Sarasota Sharks, the age-group home of two of the most accomplished female 400 IM swimmers in recent history.
The reach of his approach is perhaps best captured in a single number: programs associated with GAIN and the Gambetta method accounted for more than 30% of the 2021 U.S. Olympic swimming team.

Vern is honored to share his coaching philosophy with the Australian Coaches Association this September.
